An Eye-Opening Exposure
Luke 24:13-35
Approaching the Theme
Don’t confuse me with the “FACTS,”
I’ve already made up my mind!
Analyzing the Text Gaining a sense of “perspective” —
1-Jesus: betrayed, arrested, “tried,” & sentenced to death;
2-He was crucified, then buried in a tomb, “sealed & secure.”
3-On the third day some women found the tomb empty ...
4-His closest friends were frustrated, fearful, & fuzzy.
I. Two travelers on the road to “ WHY GOD? ” 13-15
–They were having an intense & animated discussion.
II. A traveler from “ WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? ” 15-18
A. Jesus joined them, but they were “unable to recognize” Him.
B. He inquired about their “serious” conversation.
C. They questioned His apparent ignorance about recent events.
III. An ironic & ignorant response to “ WHAT THINGS? ” 19-24
A. Jesus prompted them to explain “what they didn’t know.”
B. They “tried” to tell Jesus about Jesus:
1. A prophet mighty in deed & word, arrested & crucified;
2. We were hoping He would deliver us, but we think He failed;
3. There are reports that he arose from the dead ...
4. –but we have a hard time believing that this could be true!
IV. Jesus OPENED the Scriptures to them; 25-27
A. He addressed their:
FOOLISHNESS & FAILURE to believe.
B. He explained the FOUNDATION of truth to them!
IV. Jesus OPENED their eyes & they recognized Him; 28-32
A. They arrived in Emmaus & urged Him to stay with them.
B. He “became their host” when He blessed & broke the bread.
C. They recognized Him —& He vanished from their sight.
D. They realized that the Scriptures are the “seed” of FAITH .
V. Immediately they went to OFFER hope to the other
disciples; 33-35
A. Even though it was late, they went to Jerusalem.
B. They found the eleven gathered & shared their “good news.”
