Deuteronomy 8
HOW DO YOU MAKE A SMART FINANCIAL DECISION?

I. DECIDE YOU’RE NOT GOING TO ALLOW THE FINANCIAL AND THE MATERIAL TO MISLEAD YOU PERSONALLY….
‘ “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; and when you herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage:” ‘ Deuteronomy 8:11-14

A. God Promised To Be Good To Them…
‘ “For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.” ‘ Deuteronomy 8:7-8

B. God Warned Them… ‘DON’T FORGET!’
v.2; ‘And you shall REMEMBER that the Lord your God led you all the way…’
v.11; ‘Beware that you do not FORGET the Lord your God..’
v. 14; ‘when your heart is lifted up, and you FORGET the Lord your God…’
v. 18; ‘And you shall REMEMBER the Lord your God..’
v.19; ‘Then it shall be, if you by any means FORGET the Lord your God..’

C. God Was So Good To Them….
1. The Blessing Of An Abundance of Stuff
‘lest—when you have eaten and are full..’ v.12

‘Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.’ Ezekiel 16:49
2. Socially Blessings
‘..and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them.’ v.12
3. Vocational/Business Blessings
‘and when your herds and your flocks multiply,’ v.13
4. Financial Blessings
‘..and your silver and your gold are multiplied..’ v.13
5. Personal Blessings
‘..and all that you have is multiplied;’ v.13

II. DECIDE THAT THE FINANCIAL AND THE MATERIAL WILL NOT LURE YOU AWAY MENTALLY
‘when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.’ Deuteronomy 8:14

A. How You Are Lured Away…
1. You Begin To Forget….
a. That God Is Your Liberator
‘when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.’ Deuteronomy 8:14
b. That God Is Your Leader
‘who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there is no water’
Deuteronomy 8:15a
c. That God Is Your Sustainer
‘who brought water for you out of the flinty rock;’ Deuteronomy 8:15
d. That God is Our Provider
‘who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know’ (*IE.. They Had No Idea How They Were Going To Eat!!) Deuteronomy 8:16

‘when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;’ Deuteronomy 8:14

‘then you say in your heart, “My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.”’ Deuteronomy 8:19

2. You Begin To Be Independent Of God
‘Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.’ Deuteronomy 8:19

3. You Come To The Place Of Self-Admiration
‘then you say in your heart, “MY power and the might of MY hand have gained ME this wealth.’” Deuteronomy 8:17

‘And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is HE WHO GIVES YOU POWER to get wealth…’ Deuteronomy 8:18

III. DECIDE THAT THE FINANCIAL AND THE MATERIAL WILL NOT BECOME AN ULTIMATE LIABILITY
‘Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. As the nations which the Lord destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God.’ Deuteronomy 8:19-20
